Jane Austen Fashions - George Wickham of Pride and Prejudice
< Back to Fashions Index
Aside from Mr. Wickham being a complete cad in the world of Pride & Prejudice, he's got the smarts to get what he wants. He knows that the quickest way to the hearts of those silly English country girls is through the use of the correct words, peppering in a bit of charisma and promoting a fantastic image. This is exactly what we get when we see George Wickham in his British regimentals. The British Army coming through a small English town is big news, and the soldiers know it - most of all George Wickham.
The redcoat is highly ornate, consistent for a time when battles were fought in "Gentlemen Wars". The coat is detailed with gold accessories and capped by dark cuffs and collar. The sash is tied tightly around the waist while a white shoulder strap is carefully set from the upper right shoulder to the lower left waist. Breeches are standard issue and consistent with the times of Her Majesty's Army. Knee-high socks disappear into shin-high boots - leaving the soldier ready for just about anything. His hair is left stylish, curled and short.
When we see Wickham dressed as such, we are to believe that perhaps he's man of honor simply looking to find and earn his place in the world. Fortunately for Lizzy, she eventually sees through the talk and image, casting Wickham out for what he truly is.
Her sister, Lydia, is not so lucky. |
