Understanding the social structure of Jane Austen's time goes far beyond Counts, Barons and Sirs.
The soldier is a common recurring theme throughout Jane Austen's novels - sometimes representing the true gentlemen and, other times, embodying a true scoundrel. Nevertheless, it helps the reader a great deal to gain a certain understanding of the rank structure found in the land and sea armies of the English Empire during Jane Austen's life. This aids in grasping the social standings of some characters such as a Captain Wentworth from Persuasion.
Below is a listing of military ranks of the British Army and Royal Navy - some having stood the test of time while others no longer in modern use.
